I was an insomniac. At best, 3/4 hours of bad sleep per night.
It took me hours to fall asleep, sometimes I spent the night “sinking” and waking up, and in the morning I felt like I had been up all night. Sometimes I would wake up after 2/3 hours, and it was impossible to go back to sleep.
When I couldn’t take it anymore, I was prescribed a sleeping pill and took it for a few weeks to recover a little.
I also used these melatonin-based products, which worked for a month or two and then… finished.
When I was working – a physical job – I thought I could escape insomnia, given the physical fatigue. Not even. I was exhausted, and I slept even worse.
It lasted more than 20 years.
And one day, in a totally unexpected and unexpected way, I discovered “my” technique for sleeping well: 6/7 hours of good sleep per night, falling asleep easily, and being able to fall asleep easily if I woke up at night.
The following will seem like nothing to do with the question, but be patient !
I hate sewing. I’m absolutely not good at it, and it makes me sick…My son was planning to move in with him, in a studio.
He asked me for tea towels – it was not urgent.
At first I thought about buying some, but then I thought I had white cotton sheets from my mother that were sleeping in a closet would do just fine. I was sure my son would be sensitive to the fact that it came from his grandmother. I should be able to sew 6 or 8 cloths in it…
Especially since I have at least three months to do it. I’ll start, I cut, and sew (by hand, without a sewing machine) 2 hours or more after lunch and about 1h30 in the evening. And from the first few nights, after I started, something strange happens: I fall asleep like a stump!
It takes me two nights to realize that. I don’t understand, so much so that I don’t immediately make the connection with my new activity. But very quickly, I make the report. I sleep 7/8 hours of good restorative sleep per night. 7/8 hours! I would never have dreamed of this!
The 6/8 cloths for my son have multiplied: it is not far from 30 that I will sew by hand. It’s going a lot faster than I thought!
Then, as I love to sleep well, I make about forty of them for us, in the process.
Then… I kept sewing. A lot by hand, a bit with a sewing machine that I bought second-hand.
It’s been over 2 years… AND I ALWAYS SLEEP AS A BABY!
Which would also work:
– knitting, crochet, embroidery
– the drawing
– in short any relatively repetitive manual activity!
